Youth Volunteering

Shipmates are our Youth Volunteers.

Being a Shipmate means we'll teach you how to sail and row and how to use your new skills to go on to help and teach others.

You’ll have amazing opportunities to develop new skills, make new friends, further your education and to help us run the charity. Our Shipmate programme is aimed at young people aged 8 to 18 years - both able bodied and disabled and is graded from Bronze to Platinum.

The scheme develops skills from basic team work to leadership whilst gaining RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and BR (British Rowing) national qualifications. Shipmates meet every Saturday and at set times during school holidays.

'AHOY has helped me and my behaviour. I have started to clear up my life, started going back to school and not hanging around the 'mates' that always got me into trouble... Also you get to make new friends like I did, you might be shy but you end up having to work together, which makes you have to talk to people you don't know.' - Billie, aged 14
