The
Centre
A Charity Changing People's Lives Through Sailing ’
Proposal

AHOY wishes to develop and expand its facilities to create a Flagship Centre for water-based activities that continue to break down social barriers and teach and train people to help others. By doing so more people will have the opportunity to benefit from the activities, courses and experiences gaining confidence and new horizons.

Sitting in front of the present AHOY Centre is a disused pier which was once part of the long-gone Power Station. The proposal is, therefore, to use this existing pier as the base foundation for the expanded Centre. The new AHOY Centre will be built on the pier housing extending facilities such as changing areas, lecture facilities, catering & eating areas, reception, boat storage and boat lift, supporting the needs of all, especially those with disabilities.

A major part of the proposal is the inclusion of a Marine Academy, which will offer a range of teaching and training not only in sailing, boat handling and instructor training, but in all aspects of marine skills from navigation, engineering, carpentry through to boat construction and design, creating opportunities for achievement of NVQs, young and modern apprenticeships and internationally recognised qualifications, thus leading to employment opportunities.
To make best use of the potential of the new AHOY Centre would be to combine it with community facilities, Maritime Exhibition and potential River Boat access.

The proposal for the AHOY Centre is a well mixed and well planned building that will create a new heart to the local community by use of public spaces and public facilities. The building will add to the character of the area forming safe and accessible space for all to enjoy. One of the great prospects that will come from this development is the potential return of the Tall Ship training vessels and the increased activity which will bring vibrancy to the Thames. Through the facilities created, this will be a high profile development on the Thames, while sitting comfortably within the existing character of the area. There is no other resource on the river that provides everything in one location, while also being fully accessible to anyone; young, disabled, and retired alike.
