Met by staff and given a basic safety brief and options available through the day. These may be sailing or other fun sessions, dependent on weather or dock (windsurfing / rowing etc). Party split into smaller groups and issued their respective safety equipment. 11:00am water sports activities start with Instructors supervising students throughout. Break for lunch 12:30-1pm (bring own packed lunch and drinks). 1pm afternoon activities commence (students might swap from one activity to another after lunch). 2:30pm Activities finish, 3pm transport departs (or earlier if required). All times are flexible.

Arrive at the Centre and get a basic safety brief, correct safety equipment, points of interest/history and navigation. Boat familiarisation and launch followed by a sail. All students are actively involved in sailing the boats, observation and navigation. Mooring for lunch at a pre-designated point, either up or down river. After lunch, sailing back with more emphasis on boat handling. Recovering the boats, cleaning up and debriefing.

Initial training is held at a dock on safe water and can be either 12 afternoon sessions 1pm - 3pm, or 6 full days from 10am - 4pm (this is 'on the water time', so please bear in mind transport times). The 7th day is at the AHOY Centre for River Induction and presentation of certificates. Those that wish to carry on sailing can become AHOY Volunteers, where they can continue to participate in Youth Activities and at the same time help others. Most Youth will be able to achieve Stage 2.

SAILABILITY RYA SAILING LEVEL 1 or STAGE 1 (Youth) - ADULT & YOUTH GROUP

Arrive at the Centre and get a basic safety brief, correct safety equipment, how to sail in all directions, including launching & recovery, able to sail in light winds under minimal supervision, recovering the boats, cleaning up and debriefing. Those that wish to carry on sailing can become AHOY Volunteers, where they can continue to participate in the activities and courses and at the same time help others.
SAILING GCSE RYA - YOUTH GROUP

A group of 12, then additional participants in multiples of 6.
A lead into gaining a career in Water Sports, providing further advancement of training for people who have achieved RYA Stage 2/3; links in with Personal Education at GSCE level. Instructor ratios are 6:1. Duration over 6 sessions of 4 hours, or 3 full days 10am to 4pm (this is 'on the water time' so please bear in mind transport times). AHOY will encourage all participants to carry on sailing as Volunteers of the Centre, where they can continue to participate in the activities.
SAILING - RYA SEAMANSHIP SKILLS - ADULT & YOUTH - GROUP

Training includes: how to rig the boat, gybe and recover one type of spinnaker, either conventional or asymmetric. How to sail the best possible course downwind. Having knowledge of both types of spinnaker and the differences between them.
SAILING - RYA DAY SAILING - ADULT & YOUTH GROUP

Training includes: preparing and planning for a day cruise, pilotage and decision making including adverse conditions. At end of course: able to plan and execute a cruise, taking into account weather and tide conditions through prior planning, gaining knowledge and importance of finding out about area of sail/cruise.

All the skills required to enjoy racing; including how to maximise boat speed and how to outwit your opponents. Learning the important rules of racing, being able to use them to your advantage and racing against other centres and clubs.
SAILING - RYA PERFORMANCE SAILING - ADULT & YOUTH GROUP

Coaching to improve your sailing; primarily in two person boats with spinnakers, able to sail faster and more efficiently in all conditions, having the knowledge to 'tune' up a boat for the prevailing conditions.
SAILING RYA DINGHY INSTRUCTOR COURSE - ADULT & YOUTH GROUP

Pre- assessment included. Previous experience (normally one year at competent helm level) holding min of RYA Level 2 and First Aid certificate. The course covers knowing about the RYA's various teaching methods, safe working ratios, various sailing conditions and learning how to deal with a wide range of student's abilities and disabilities. Once trained, the participant will be able to teach adult and youth beginners and improvers to RYA sailing Level 2. An instructor's certificate has to be renewed every 5 years.
POWER BOAT - RYA Level 1 & 2 - ADULT & YOUTH GROUP

Course covers: launching and recovery, preparation of the boat, boat handling, boat handling under way, leaving and coming alongside, securing to a buoy, anchoring, man overboard, on shore teaching, types of craft, engines and drives, ancillary and safety equipment. This qualification comes with a Coastal Endorsement. Those that wish to carry on sailing are encouraged to become AHOY Volunteers, where they can continue to participate in
activities and courses, at the same time helping others.

RYA SAFETY BOAT OFFICER COURSE - GROUPS

The course is a must for people that wish to be confident power boat drivers. It takes a power boat driver L2 to being able to handle many different situations on the water. The course includes: boat handling, positioning in respect to fleet size of sailing area, response times, various methods for person recovery from water, right a multi-hull/ performance dinghy, lee shore recovery, understanding different hull shapes and drives, byelaws and regulations, explaining race management duties including importance of marking abandoned boats, how to position tow lines, appropriate speeds to use.
AHOY INTRODUCTION TO ROWING - ADULT & YOUTH GROUPS

Introduction to Rowing (indoor and outdoor). Sessions planned according to the needs of individuals.
Focus on team work and fitness. Indoor rowing sessions can be taught at different locations, all training courses include session/s afloat in the waterman cutters on the river Thames.
RYA NAVIGATIONAL COURSE - ADULTS & YOUTH GROUP

This course is for people who want to brush up on their navigational skills - this may be after a level 2 course, or before an Instructors course.
This non-examination course is intended to provide complete beginners with an easy introduction to basic chart work and associated planning. Based on the RYA national scheme, this course will provide you with an ideal grounding in basic navigation and pilotage skills. The programme is designed to offer confident progression to the full RYA Day Skipper shore-based theory course, but is equally suitable for dinghy sailors and powerboat drivers operating in sheltered coastal waters.
All charts and plotting instruments are provided.
Morning sessions are land-based and, after lunch, you will go afloat and put what you have learned to use.
FIRST AID RYA COURSE - ADULT & YOUTH GROUP

Groups of 6 - maximum 12 participants. The RYA first aid is either a 1 day course or held over 3 evenings. The course is aimed specifically for use by people that use small craft. Providing the knowledge to be able to deal with majority of things like: first response to broken bones, heart attacks, choking, how to put someone in the recovery position or deal with burns. This course will give people the knowledge and practical experience to deal with a medical situation as a first response; 'holding the fort' until the trained medic arrives.

This course is aimed at those who aspire to volunteer or attain a career working with people with a disability. The course covers many areas such as terminology, communication, physical impairment, visual impairment, deaf blind, equipment and adaptations, transfer techniques and much more.

The RYA Day Skipper Shore-Based course equips the aspiring skipper with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. Students are taught the basics of coastal and in-shore navigation and pilotage, including chartwork, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, weather forecasting, knowledge of tides and the International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea. The first time you safely navigate to a new destination will give you an immense feeling of satisfaction. As well as navigation, the RYA Day Skipper Shore-Based course will give students an understanding of different yacht types, the equipment they carry, as well as safety procedures such as distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, life jackets and life-raft.
This course is suitable for both beginners and candidates with limited knowledge and experience. The course covers power and sail and is, therefore, suitable for divers, fishermen, power boaters and yachtsmen.

On completion of this course, the successful sailor will understand how to sail a dinghy rigged with an asymmetric or symmetric spinnaker. It is assumed that every student starting this course has already mastered the practical skills and absorbed the background knowledge required for Basic Skills Level 1.
